One thing that I do not like about summer is the amount of skin that is exposed. It really does frustrate me. There are some people that just should not be flaunting their bodies, even though they make me feel better about mine. But I feel that I even get more frustrated with the people that look amazing wearing very little clothing. I do not appreciate the fact that they leave little to the imagination and that my husband and four sons have to be exposed to their almost-naked bodies. I feel that string bikinis can be the worse and that much nudity should only be seen by one's spouse.
I have been fortunate that without much emphasis by me, my boys recognize and dislike immodesty. William will always point out to me a person (whether on TV or in person) that is being immodest. Going through Dick's Sporting Good store with Mikey is a riot as he slaps away the pictures and advertisements of immodest pictures, most of which show girls wearing sports bras and running shorts.
The other day I pulled behind a small gang of motorcyclist. On the back of a few were some women wearing typical summer clothing. Roger saw this and exclaimed, "They're riding their motorcycles to the beach!" He had assumed that their clothing was actually swimwear. I just hope that my boys can keep up their determination of avoiding immodesty and keep their innocence.
What do you do to teach your children about modesty and to avoid looking at pictures or people that are not being modest?

I haven't really approached that subject with Hannah yet, obviously but I think I will probably tell her that even though they dress that way we don't because we have learned not to and know better. We know Heavenly Father has given us our bodies to protect and take care of and we should respect them and cover them up. Not sure about avoiding it with little boys though, it gets pretty hard when you are at the mall playplace and there are HUGE undressed V.S. posters staring you in the face!!! :(
this is a hard one. I have always been up front with Livi. She knows what's modest and what isn't. She has worn tank tops and the like (I never did, EVER), but she also knows that when she turns 8, she isn't going to wear them anymore.
I don't think that this is hypocritical, since she knows the extent that is inappropriate. She has never worn a bikini..
She knows her body is a temple. I think that is a great starting point.
I also think that teaching boys IS harder since they are more geared to things like that...they are visual. I think that being a good example to them and teaching them correctly is one of the only ways we can teach them.
Good luck and if you come up with anything brilliant..send it along!
PS. I agree with Laura..the VS stuff in the mall is ridiculous! I think that putting it right in front of the children's playplace is also a major disappointment...
Way to go Loni your example is definitely paying off.
When Amber was born we decided that she would dress modest from the beginning. As cute as little girl sun dresses are she has never worn one without a t-shirt under it. Now at almost 9 she is so modest that she thinks any dresses that hit her knees are too short.
With the boys we started when they were young too and hit the age where they liked to pull their shirts up. We would make it a game if we saw their naked bellies. The only hurdle I have yet to get over with the boys is to close the bathroom door. :)
Loni, you and Todd are doing great .. keep up the good work.
